Office of Science Selections from Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) for the Week of July 31, 2024
Atmospheric System Research (ASR) $15 Million awarded for 17 projects ASR supports research on key cloud, aerosol, precipitation, and radiative transfer processes that affect the Earth’s radiative balance and hydrological cycle, especially processes that affect the predictive ability of regional and global models. These observational, data analysis, and/or modeling studies that use observations supported by the Biological and Environmental Research program, including the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement
Research on Environmental System Science $9 Million awarded for 12 projects The goal of the Environmental System Science portfolio is to advance an integrated, robust, and scale-aware predictive understanding of terrestrial systems and their interdependent microbial, biogeochemical, ecological, hydrological, and physical processes. These awards focus on measurements, experiments, field data, modeling, and synthesis to provide improved understanding and representation of ecosystems and watersheds in ways that advance the sophistication and capabilities of models spanning from individual processes to Earth-system scales. Data Reduction for Science
Scientific observations, experiments, and simulations are now producing data at rates beyond our capacity to store or analyze them. Of necessity, scientists have already begun reducing the size of their data sets via techniques such as lossless and lossy compression, reduced-order models, and filtering. These awards support fundamental mathematical and computational research that will advance the state of the art in data reduction and produce algorithms and tools to address the data explosion.
