Overview
The Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Science - Headquarters is looking for a dynamic, innovative, seasoned executive to lead the Basic Energy Sciences (BES) program. It is one of the nation's largest sponsors of research in the natural sciences and is uniquely responsible for supporting fundamental research impacting energy resources, production, conversion, transmission, storage, efficiency, and waste mitigation.
The research disciplines that BES supports—condensed matter and materials physics, chemistry, geosciences, and aspects of biosciences—touch virtually every important aspect of energy resources, production, conversion, transmission, storage, efficiency, and waste mitigation, providing a knowledge base for achieving a secure and sustainable energy future. BES research provides a knowledge base to help understand, predict, and ultimately control the natural world. BES scientific user facilities consist of complementary X-ray sources, neutron sources, and centers for research utilizing nanoscale science, probing materials and chemical systems with ultrahigh spatial, temporal, and energy resolutions to investigate the critical functions of matter to answer challenging science questions and provide insights on the scientific basis for energy technologies.
The Associate Director of BES is responsible for the overall management of the BES program, including strategic program planning; budget formulation and execution; project management; program integration with other Office of Science activities and other DOE offices; interagency and international liaison; and management of federal and rotating technical and administrative staff in the BES program office.
