The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) released a funding opportunity announcement under the General Plasma Science program to support research on general plasma science collaborative research facilities. This funding provides an opportunity for external collaborators or users of these facilities to carry out frontier plasma science research and acquire experience and preliminary data, carry out data analysis and/or validation resulting in peer-reviewed publications, and transition to a full three-year research program available through other funding opportunity announcements.
The collaborative research facilities the General Plasma Science program supports include the Big Red Ball and Madison Symmetric Torus experiments at the Wisconsin Plasma Physics Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin – Madison; the Large Plasma Device in the Basic Plasma Science Facility at the University of California – Los Angeles; the DIII-D Frontier Science Campaign at General Atomics; the Magnetized Dusty Plasma Experiment at the Magnetized Plasma Research Laboratory at Auburn University; the low-temperature Plasma Research Facility at Sandia National Laboratories; and Princeton Collaborative Research Facility at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory.
