Champion. Catalyze. Connect.
Our vision is for basic science engagement to be supported, sustainable, and effective. So, in July 2021, we launched a large community conversation about what we know and what we do not know about public engagement in basic science.
What did we learn and what comes next?
Charting a Path for Public Engagement in Basic Science:
A Prospectus
This prospectus is a summary of where SciPEP believes we are on our journey to understand effective basic science engagement and a roadmap to key destinations we hope to arrive at along the way. There is a lot of work to do before we can confidently craft effective goals, strategies, tactics - and therefore tools and resources - specific to basic science engagement and communication. Our questions:
- What pathways and incentives are needed to integrate science communication scholarship into basic science engagement practice and training?
- What pathways and incentives are needed to institutionalize evaluation of public engagement in basic science communication and engagement?
- What should be included in a comprehensive research agenda to improve/advance practices and training for public engagement in basic science?
- How can critical issues of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion be integrated and prioritized into current and future basic science public engagement efforts?
Our hope is that this prospectus will serve as the table setting for our future work at SciPEP and as a catalyst for community consideration and action.

There are more questions than answers about the why, what, and how of effectively communicating and engaging the public in basic science. We need your help to bring to bear the critical wisdom, expertise, and experience for SciPEP’s next steps. Join us to share your thoughts on the SciPEP prospectus and your suggestions for the path forward.
Space in the community feedback session is limited, so please be sure you can attend these virtual sessions before registering.

Communicating the Future: An Agenda for Engaging the Public with Basic Science
We are excited to participate in the AAAS 2022 annual meeting. What are goals for public engagement with basic science? Do they differ from applied science? Are curiosity and awe drivers of public interest in basic science? Watch our spotlight videos - available to view on-demand. Then engage with us live for an interactive discussion to explore these types of questions and more!
How Can We Ensure Public Engagement in Basic Science Is Equitable And Inclusive?
Equitable public engagement requires elevating different ways of knowing, developing tools to build culturally appropriate science communication strategies, and understanding the nuances of engagement of basic science with populations frequently left out of these efforts. This facilitated discussion touched on the importance of addressing exclusion and disenfranchisement among both scientists and members of the public, especially in the communication of basic science.
