The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) just launched a $900 million program to build and deploy next-generation light-water small modular reactors (SMRs).
This funding, $100 million of which is coming from the Office of Nuclear Energy, will help strengthen the domestic nuclear industry and spur follow-on reactor projects.
SMRs are versatile and have the potential to be deployed in a variety of settings, from remote to urban, due to their small footprint, modular design, factory-based construction, and use of established fuel supply chains — all of which serve to lower overall project costs.
DOE anticipates releasing a two-tiered funding solicitation in late summer/fall of 2024.
