Recent Announcements
The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) announced nearly $10 million for two projects to conduct advanced laboratory and bench-scale testing to help lower the costs and reduce the environmental impact of producing rare earth elements and other critical minerals and materials from coal, coal wastes, and coal by-products. Funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the selected projects will help meet the growing demand for critical minerals and materials in the United States, while reducing our reliance on foreign supply chains.
The Ocean Energy Safety Institute (OESI) announced up to $16 million in funding to foster enhanced safety protocols, improved technologies, and new insights into risk management for energy across three application areas: oil and gas, wind energy, and marine energy. OESI is also inviting offshore energy experts to volunteer to review submitted proposals. OESI is a Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement and DOE-funded consortium of industry, national labs, nongovernmental organizations, and academia.
DOE announced $52 million for a broad range of projects in 39 states—from cybersecurity for electric vehicle charging infrastructure to new ways to detect radiation threats and new ways to manufacture lithium metal for batteries. DOE’s Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer awards strive to transform DOE-supported science and technology breakthroughs. FECM is a sponsor of this program, along with other DOE offices.
DOE announced the latest round of cohorts in its Lab-Embedded Entrepreneurship Program. Thirty-three innovators were selected to be embedded across four U.S. national laboratories, where they will work with an extensive network of mentors and experts to develop next-generation technologies. These technologies will help to ensure a sustainable and equitable clean energy future that benefits all Americans. FECM is a sponsor of this program, along with other DOE offices.
The Carbon Management Projects (CONNECT) Toolkit is an online mapping tool and database that provides details about key federally funded carbon management projects, such as the funding status and amount, location, sources of carbon dioxide emissions, and many other project details. It also offers relevant information on other federal initiatives, regulatory permits, natural resource potential, existing infrastructure, point-source emissions, socio-demographic indicators, and protected lands.
