U.S. Department of Energy Announces Opportunity for Industry to Connect to High Performance Computing Resources at National Laboratories
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced a new solicitation to connect industry partners with the high performance computing resources and expertise at DOE’s national laboratories to improve material performance, advance manufacturing processes, and reduce industrial emissions.
Through the High Performance Computing for Energy Innovation (HPC4EI) initiative, selected teams will harness the raw processing power of our national laboratories’ supercomputers through short-term collaborative projects. The projects will apply advanced modeling, simulation, and data analysis to address key manufacturing and materials challenges and move us closer to the Biden-Harris Administration’s goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
HPC4EI is the parent initiative for the HPC4Materials (HPC4Mtls) and HPC4Manufacturing (HPC4Mfg) Programs. The HPC4EI Spring 2024 Solicitation will fund projects within both programs.
The HPC4Mtls program is funded through DOE’s Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM). Under its Hydrogen with Carbon Management and Point Source Carbon Capture programs, FECM is soliciting industry partners who will use high performance computing to bolster domestic materials supply chains needed to reduce emissions across industrial and power facilities. Specific areas of interest include projects that will advance functional and structural materials used for hydrogen applications; advance materials for reactive carbon capture; and advance materials for non-carbon dioxide emissions mitigation.
The HPC4Mfg program is funded through DOE’s Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office (IEDO). IEDO aims to advance the strategies identified in DOE’s Industrial Decarbonization Roadmap and support the goals of the Industrial Heat Shot. IEDO seeks high performance computing-based solutions to reduce emissions from industrial process heating and from energy- and emissions-intensive industries—including chemicals, iron and steel, cement and concrete, food and beverage, forest products, aluminum, and glass.
Eligibility is limited to U.S. manufacturers. U.S. universities, institutes, and other non-profit organizations are also eligible to participate as collaborators. The solicitation encourages applicants to partner with a diverse range of universities, community colleges, and non-profit organizations, especially those located in disadvantaged communities.
