FECM welcomes Marianne Walck, Ph.D. As director, Walck will manage the complete NETL complex, including delivery and execution of the Laboratory's mission and national programs in carbon-based energy and program support to the DOE Offices of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy; Electricity; and Cybersecurity, Energy Security and Emergency Response. As director, Walck will foster strategic relationships with utility and academic institutions, state and local governments, and important carbon management stakeholders.
On February 9, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and DOE announced a notice of intent to fund projects that help oil and natural gas sector operators cut methane emissions and transition to innovative methane emissions reduction technologies, while also supporting partnerships to improve emissions measurement and provide accurate, transparent data to impacted communities.
On February 12, FECM announced up to $100 million to support pilot projects and testing facilities to demonstrate and scale carbon dioxide removal technologies that reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) pollution by removing it directly from the atmosphere and then storing the CO2 in geological, biobased, and ocean reservoirs or converting it into value-added products.
On February 13, DOE’s Bioenergy Technologies Office and FECM announced a notice of intent to fund research and development projects for converting algae and other wet waste feedstocks into low-carbon fuels, chemicals, and agricultural products.
On February 15, FECM announced over $17 million for three projects that will support the design and construction of facilities that produce rare earth elements and other critical minerals and materials from coal-based resources.
On February 22, FECM announced up to $2.7 million in federal funding available to help local communities across the country create a roadmap toward repurposing existing energy assets, with expanded eligibility for participants.
On February 29, FECM announced up to $30 million in federal funding available for projects that will support the conversion of CO2 into environmentally responsible and economically valuable products and the development of lower-cost, highly efficient technologies to capture CO2 from industrial sources and power plants for permanent storage or conversion.
