A Message From Leadership
Message from Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy Steven Winberg
Today, the Department of Energy announced $118 million in federal funding to support the Coal FIRST (Flexible, Innovative, Resilient, Small, Transformative) Initiative under two separate funding opportunity announcements (FOAs).
Under the first FOA, Critical Components for Coal FIRST Power Plants of the Future, the Department has selected seven projects to receive approximately $37 million in federal funding. And, through the second FOA, Design Development and System Integration Design Studies for Coal FIRST Concepts, the Department intends to award $81 million for cost-shared research and development projects.
Learn more about the importance of this initiative, Coal FIRST, and the FOAs by visiting the Office of Fossil Energy's website. The press release that was issued this morning is available here.

Fossil Energy Monthly Highlights
3 Ways Fossil Energy Ensures U.S. Energy Security
The global economy has just experienced a period of unique transformation because of COVID-19. The fact that remains constant in this new economic landscape is that our society relies on energy; it’s an integral part of our day-to-day lives. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, approximately 80 percent of energy consumption in the United States comes from fossil fuels, so having access to a secure and reliable supply of those energy resources is more important than ever.
This new blog details three examples that highlight how our work at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy (FE) helps ensure the Nation’s energy security and resiliency.

NETL-Funded Cooperative Agreement Develops New Rare Earth Element Extraction Sorbent
Wayne State University (WSU) researchers successfully produced a potentially economically viable concentration of rare earth elements (REEs) from domestic coal fly ash. This project is part of a National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL)-funded cooperative agreement. Its success marks an important step forward in the discovery of technologies that can help the Nation produce a domestic supply of REEs, a priority for the U.S. Department of Energy.
To execute this project, researchers used custom-built reactors at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and a process called hydrothermal leaching. They extracted the REE content from coal fly ash samples taken from a coal-fired power plant near Detroit, MI. A new sorbent media—developed at WSU in coordination with LANL and the University of California, Los Angeles—was used in a solid-liquid recovery process, which eliminated the use of potentially hazardous organic solvents. The researchers combined multiple techniques and methodologies previously developed to process spent nuclear fuel and other nuclear materials. They were able to separate lanthanides from other elements occurring with them, resulting in the production of REEs.
