$9.5M Investment in Social Science Research on Solar Energy Siting
SETO selected four projects to receive $9.5 million through the Solar Energy Evolution and Diffusion Studies 4 (SEEDS 4) funding program. These social science research projects will generate actionable insights to improve large-scale solar siting processes and outcomes for host communities—particularly those that are disadvantaged—as well as the solar industry and other stakeholders. DOE Announces First Projects Under New Cleanup to Clean Energy Initiative
DOE announced the first proposed projects selected under the Department’s Cleanup to Clean Energy initiative, an innovative effort to repurpose parts of DOE-owned lands—portions of which were previously used in the nation’s nuclear weapons program—into sites of clean-energy generation. DOE will enter into lease negotiations with two solar energy developers for carbon-free electricity generation projects within the 890-square-mile Idaho National Laboratory site with a goal of producing 400 megawatts of solar power—enough to power 70,000 homes. Biden-Harris Administration Announces $45 Million to to Establish Energy Efficiency Revolving Loan Funds
As part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, the DOE announced six awards, totaling approximately $45 million, from the Energy Efficiency Revolving Loan Fund Capitalization Grant (RLF) Program. The Program, supported by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, provides funds that allows states and territories to provide loans and grants to residents for energy efficiency audits, upgrades, and retrofits. The RLF program will enable states to access capital to fund energy efficiency projects and will encourage financial institutions to enable American families and small businesses to save money and reduce their energy costs. On June 4-5, 2024, the DOE’s Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization hosted the 2024 DOE Small Business Forum & Expo in Minneapolis. With over 1,000 attendees, the two-day conference connected small and disadvantaged businesses with the Department’s program offices, power marketing administrations, laboratory and technology centers, and prime contractors. DOE Welcomes New Round of Innovative Leaders to Peer-Learning Cohorts on Emerging Clean Energy Strategies
DOE announced a new round of leaders from 45 entities that will collaborate on common clean energy opportunities and challenges through the Clean Energy to Communities program's peer-learning cohorts. These participants—including county and local governments, Tribes, community-based organizations, and utilities—will convene regularly from July to December 2024 to exchange strategies and best practices, learn in a collaborative environment from each other and DOE’s national laboratory experts, and workshop their pathways to agrivoltaics implementation, residential energy efficiency programs, or municipal fleet electrification.
