OCED opened up applications for up to $100 million in funding to support pilot-scale energy storage demonstration projects focused on non-lithium technologies, long-duration (10+ hour discharge) systems, and stationary storage . The funding is to support projects that will advance a diverse set of non-lithium energy storage technologies towards commercial viability and utility-scale deployment. Concept papers are due by October 16, 2024. Learn more and apply here.
OCED announced its intent to fund up to $1.8 billion to support the design, construction, and operation of mid- and large-scale commercial direct air capture (DAC) facilities and infrastructure scaling platforms. The anticipated funding aims to support the growth of the DAC industry by offering new pathways to commercialization, building on the momentum of existing Regional DAC Hubs and DOE programming to address deployment challenges to DAC technologies. DOE anticipates releasing a funding solicitation in winter 2024. View the Notice of intent here.
OCED announced its intent to fund up to $1.3 billion to catalyze investments in transformative carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies. As part of OCED’s Carbon Capture Demonstration Projects Program and Carbon Capture Large-Scale Pilot Projects Program, the anticipated funding opportunity seeks to enhance the confidence of commercial entities in adopting CCUS technologies, broaden the market for electricity generation and industrial emitters, and reduce costs to expand the feasibility of CCUS implementation across facilities. DOE anticipates releasing a funding solicitation in late 2024. View the Notice of intent here.
OCED selected three projects for award negotiations for up to $50 million in funding to help the U.S. develop a more responsive, resilient, and economical electric grid. As part of OCED’s Distributed Energy Systems (DES) Demonstrations Program, these selected projects span across Colorado, Massachusetts, and Virginia to support the demands of an increasingly electrified nation filled with electric vehicles, advanced industrial operations, smart technologies, and sizeable energy storage. Learn more about the projects selected for award negotiations here.
DOE announced three winners of the Manufacture of Advanced Key Energy Infrastructure Technologies (MAKE IT) Prize Facilities Track who have each received $5 million throughout the prize for demonstrating that they are ready to begin building a manufacturing facility to produce critical clean energy components. Read about the winners and learn what’s next for the MAKE IT Prize here.
DOE released an update to its Advanced Nuclear Pathways to Commercial Liftoff Report due to unprecedented load growth, renewed interest in building large-scale nuclear power plants, and the value of the existing nuclear fleet. The new updated report provides a fact base to generate faster, more coordinated action for the deployment of advanced nuclear reactor technology to help increase access to clean energy. Read the report here.
SEPTEMBER AWARDS
In September, OCED d 19 projects across 14 states and one tribal nation as part of seven programs including, Clean Energy Demonstration Program on Current and Former Mine Land; Carbon Capture Demonstration Projects Program; Carbon Capture Large-Scale Pilot Projects Program; Energy Improvements in Remote and Rural Areas; Long-Duration Energy Storage; and Regional Direct Air Capture Hubs. This month, OCED also announced 33 Phase 2 winners as part of its Energizing Rural Communities Prize. View the project awards made in September here.
Direct Air Capture Hubs Program Notice of Intent Informational Webinar

New Dates: Direct Air Capture Hub Project Cypress Community Open Houses
OCED is taking part in a series of Community Open Houses hosted by Project Cypress on in Louisiana. These open houses are to provide community members with an opportunity to meet the teams and learn more about the project, including direct air capture technology, community benefits, workforce development, storage and transportation safety, and more. For more information, please contact projectcypress_DAC@hq.doe.gov.
Join OCED on November 19 for an in-person Carbon Management Industry Day in the Washington, D.C. metro area. At the event, DOE staff will discuss the objectives of the anticipated direct air capture solicitation and the large-scale CCUS technologies solicitation, provide an opportunity for various industry segments to learn more about the potential funding opportunities, and create a forum for teaming. Indicate your interest by completing this form.
