OCED awarded the Baytown Carbon Capture and Storage Project, led by Calpine Texas CCUS Holdings, an indirect subsidiary of Calpine, with $12.5 million (of the total federal cost share of up to $270 million) to begin Phase 1 activities. Calpine plans to build a carbon capture demonstration facility that would capture CO2 from a natural gas combined cycle power plant in Baytown, TX. Learn more here.

OCED awarded the Columbia Energy Storage Project, led by Alliant Energy, with more than $7 million (of the total project federal cost share of up to $30.7 million) to begin Phase 1 activities. Alliant Energy plans to construct a grid-tied compressed CO2 LDES system at the Columbia Energy Center, a soon-to-be retired coal-fired power plant in Pacific, WI. Learn more here.
OCED awarded the Communities Accessing Resilient Energy Storage (CARES) project, led by ReJoule, with $1 million (of the total federal cost share of up to $10 million) to begin Phase 1 activities. ReJoule plans to demonstrate ways to maximize the value of used batteries by repurposing lithium-ion batteries from electric vehicles to build modular energy storage systems for behind-the-meter microgrid installations. Proposed project locations for the CARES project include Red Lake Nation, MN; Santa Fe, NM; and Petaluma, CA. Learn more here.
OCED awarded the Stored Rechargeable Energy Demonstration (STORED) project, led by Urban Electric Power (UEP) in collaboration with the New York Power Authority and EPRI, with more than $675,000 (of the total project federal cost share of up to $6.5 million) to begin Phase 1 activities. UEP plans to develop and build two LDES systems that together provide up to 600 kW of power for up to 12 hours per discharge, using its own rechargeable zinc-manganese dioxide batteries at two sites: State University of New York Oneonta in Oneonta, NY and Westchester County’s Grasslands Reservation in Valhalla, NY. Learn more here.
OCED awarded the Front-of-the-meter Utilization of Zinc Bromide Energy Storage (FUZES) Project, led by NextEra Energy Resources Development, with roughly $400,000 (of the total federal cost share of up to $49.1 million) to begin Phase 1 activities. NextEra plans to develop, build, and operate zinc-bromide battery energy storage systems at existing renewable energy sites in Morrow County, OR; Manitowoc County, WI; and LaMoure County, ND, with each of these systems providing a total of 5-10 MW of power for at least 10 hours. Learn more here.
OCED announced its intent to fund up to $100 million for pilot-scale energy storage demonstration projects, focusing on non-lithium technologies, long-duration (10+ hour discharge) systems, and stationary storage applications. The anticipated funding aims to support the advancement of a diverse set of non-lithium long-duration energy storage (LDES) technologies towards commercial viability and utility-scale deployment, an integral ingredient in a clean, reliable grid system necessary to achieve a carbon free clean energy economy. DOE anticipates releasing a funding solicitation in late summer to early fall. View the Notice of Intent here.
