New Pathways to Commercial Liftoff Reports Released
DOE released two new Pathways to Commercial Liftoff reports this month: the first on grid deployment and the second on offshore wind development. The innovative grid report focuses on finding ways to catalyze deployment of existing but underutilized grid solutions to address near-term hotspots and to modernize the grid in preparation for a variety of potential energy needs into the future. The offshore wind report discusses how the U.S. offshore wind sector is adapting to challenges and poised for continued progress to create tens of thousands of new, good-paying jobs and expand access to clean energy for millions of Americans, with a path to deploying more than 100 gigawatts by 2050. Read the wind report here and the grid report here.
DOE Spotlights Alaskan OCED Employee Annette Hard
In the Department of Energy’s series of interviews designed to highlight the lives and achievements of some of its outstanding employees with connections to Alaska and the Arctic, DOE interviewed OCED employee and lifelong Alaskan, Annette Hard. In the interview, Hard reported experiencing firsthand the exorbitant electricity bills and the impact of climate change on her beloved rural Alaskan town and noted that she joined OCED to help make an impact. Energy Improvements in Rural or Remote Areas Program Holds Grant Virtual Briefings
OCED is hosting a series of national and regional virtual briefings to communicate with key stakeholders on the recently selected ERA grant projects. These briefings provide additional information on the selected projects, introduce OCED’s approach to clean energy demonstrations, and provide opportunities for communities to engage further on specific projects of interest. Register for the briefings here.
H2Hubs Listening Sessions: Recap and New Sessions Added
In April, OCED continued the listening session series for the Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs (H2Hubs), with sessions for the Mid-Atlantic Hydrogen Hub, Gulf Coast Hydrogen Hub, and Midwest Hydrogen Hub. OCED continues its sessions with the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub on May 1. The purpose of these sessions is to gather OCED personnel, project teams, and local community members together and hear community feedback about each of the H2Hubs. Due to high demand, OCED added additional sessions for the Appalachian Hydrogen Hub and the Mid-Atlantic Hydrogen Hub in May. Summaries of all listening sessions as well as links to register for upcoming sessions are on the OCED website here.
Industrial Demonstrations Project Selections Continue Virtual Community Briefings
Following the National Briefing in March, OCED hosted a series of five regional virtual briefings throughout the month of April to provide information on the 33 Industrial Demonstrations Program (IDP) projects selected for award negotiations and to serve as a forum for local communities to provide input on the projects. IDP plans to hold a series of sector specific briefings in the near future. Sign up for OCED Alerts to be notified when briefing dates are announced.
Mine Land Program Completes Project Selections Virtual Briefings
Throughout April, OCED co-hosted five virtual community briefings to provide information on the projects selected for award negotiations via the Clean Energy Demonstration Program on Current and Former Mine Land. The briefings reviewed project-specific information and OCED’s approach to clean energy demonstrations and offered local communities an opportunity to learn about and provide input on the selected projects. View the slides from the briefings here.
