Solar System Cuts Health Center’s Yearly Cost by $2,600, Provides Workforce Training

In our latest Tribal Energy Snapshot, learn more about the Coeur d’Alene Tribe’s rooftop solar photovoltaic project, which will provide clean energy to the Tribe’s recreation center and solar installation training for 10 community members. The 35.2-kW solar photovoltaic system will reduce annual electricity costs by approximately $2,600.

Apply To Join the Office of Indian Energy Alaska Team
 Are you an engineer or physical scientist with experience working with Alaska Native Villages, Alaska Native Regional and Village Corporations, Alaska Native Intertribal Organizations, or Alaskan Tribal Energy Development Organizations to advance and develop clean energy?
We are looking for up to four engineers or physical scientists with these specialized skills to apply to join the Office of Indian Energy. These positions are “remote restricted” and will require the selectee to live within 500 air miles of Anchorage or Fairbanks, Alaska.
In this position, you will oversee a diverse Tribal energy portfolio or act as a technical expert on clean energy planning, energy efficiency audits, resource assessments, building codes, and utility formation in Alaska.

Communities LEAP Supports Tribe To Win Tribal Electrification Program Award
Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska Awarded $9.4 Million Electrification Grant from U.S. Department of the Interior

In 2022, the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska began their participation in in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Communities LEAP (Local Energy Action Program) with a goal to understand various microgrid scenarios and build capacity and training for microgrid deployment.
Less than two years later, the Tribe leveraged the data and information gained in Communities LEAP to apply for and win a $9.4 million Tribal Electrification Program grant from the U.S. Department of the Interior.

DOE Seeks Public Input on Environmental Justice Strategic Plan
The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Energy Justice and Equity has released a request for information to the public, seeking input on DOE’s new Environmental Justice Strategic Plan. DOE aims to support underserved American communities and encourage public participation in human health and environmental decision-making.
Through this plan, DOE will explore the concept of energy justice, examine internal and external perspectives, acknowledge historical environmental harms, clarify terminology, and discuss the role of the Justice40 Initiative in implementing energy justice and environmental justice at the DOE.
Submit your written input by July 31.
Tribal Energy Rebates: DOE Releases Sample Responses To Support Tribes in Completing Funding Applications
 DOE has released Sample Narrative Responses that Tribes can incorporate into their funding applications under the Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates program.
DOE is providing this optional document to assist Tribes in preparing the narrative portion of their funding applications. DOE developed the document in response to requests from Tribes to facilitate a more efficient application process.
To date, 20 states and territories have applied for full program funding, and on June 27, DOE announced that the Penobscot Nation is the first Tribe to apply for the Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates program.
Tribes have until May 31, 2025, to apply for their funding.
DOE Supports the Clean Energy Transition by Reducing Solar System Soft Costs
 DOE's Strategic Analysis and Institutional Support team addresses challenges associated with reducing non-hardware cost components of solar energy systems.

Enhanced Geothermal Systems Pilot Demonstrations
$14.2 million Apply by Sept. 25.
DOE’s Geothermal Technologies Office announced a second-round funding opportunity as part of their Enhanced Geothermal Systems Pilot Demonstrations initiative. This funding offers up to $14.2 million for enhanced geothermal systems projects that use innovative technology and techniques to tap into subsurface heat resources.
Notice of Intent: Non-Lithium Long-Duration Energy Storage Pilot Projects
$100 million FOA anticipated late summer/early fall.
On July 2, the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations issued a Notice of Intent for up to $100 million to fund pilot-scale energy storage demonstration projects, focusing on non-lithium technologies, long-duration (10+ hour discharge) systems, and stationary storage applications.
Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Discretionary Grant Program: Round 2
$1.3 billion Apply by Aug. 28.
This funding will expand the national electric vehicle charging network by funding electric vehicle charging and alternative-fueling infrastructure in urban and rural communities and along designated highways, interstates, and major roadways—including charging at multifamily housing and destinations where vehicles are parked.
