We’ve recently executed three memorandums of understanding that will propel our research forward in areas that are important for Argonne and our sponsors. All Argonne employees are welcome to join the opening plenary session of the 2024 APS/CNM Users Meeting on Monday, May 6, 2024, at 8:30 a.m. CT in the Building 402 Auditorium. Refreshments will be available prior to the start of the meeting.

Argonne’s Health and Employee Wellness (HEW) program will host a Mental Health and Substance Abuse Education & Resource Fair on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. CT in the Building 213 Cafeteria. This HEW event is being held to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Month, observed every year since 1949 in May.

Argonne’s upgraded Advanced Photon Source is now the world’s first synchrotron light source to use a multi-bunch swap-out method of replenishing the electron beam in its storage ring. On Monday, April 29, 2024, Argonne’s Accelerator Systems division team successfully demonstrated multi-bunch swap-out injection of a stored beam of electrons.

Argonne employees from diverse professional backgrounds are invited to volunteer to be a judge for the first round of the Postdoc Research Slam competition. Judging will take place from approximately May 17 – June 17, 2024. It will take approximately three hours to view and score up to 10 three-minute video submissions, and a final meeting to select the top submissions.

If so, Human Resource Services – Employee Benefits is offering a virtual presentation on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at 10 a.m. CT that will discuss Argonne’s retiree health care benefits. This presentation will include information on Argonne’s pre-65 retiree health care, post-65 retiree Medicare, and Alight Retiree Health Solutions. Join via Teams.

Prescription safety glasses services (May 9) Argonne’s prescription safety glasses provider, Eyelation, offers monthly onsite services that include vision assessments, frame sampling, adjustments, and assistance placing orders. You can also place online orders at any time. The next visit to the Lemont campus is Thursday, May 9, 2024, from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. CT.

The annual Argonne Combined Appeal (ACA) campaign runs from May 1 - 31, 2024. For more than two decades, Argonne employees and retirees have participated in the ACA and raised more than $5.5 million to benefit local and national health and welfare agencies. Take a moment to select an ACA agency that you would like to support.

The ninth annual Department of Energy (DOE) Mile takes place on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at noon CT on the Lemont campus. Participants can also compete in the DOE Mile virtually by submitting a recorded time for a mile run/walk. Sixteen labs are participating this year, with over 1,300 participants expected. Results are tabulated in cross country scoring, divided into gender, and run/walk categories. The event is open to employees, spouses, and dependents.
