AET DEIA Impact Awards

The AET DEIA Council is happy to announce the nomination process for the Argonne AET DEIA Impact Awards. Through this award criteria and nomination process, the Argonne AET DEIA Impact Award aims to honor and elevate individuals who are leading the way in advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility for all colleagues at Argonne National Laboratory.

Nomination Criteria

AET's DEIA Impact Award recognizes individuals within the AET division who have demonstrated exceptional commitment and innovation in promoting DEIA. Through this award, we aim to celebrate and amplify efforts that contribute to creating a more equitable and inclusive environment within Argonne. Nomination criteria includes:

  • Nominees showcase tangible outcomes resulting from their DEIA efforts, such as increased representation, improved accessibility, or enhanced inclusivity within the laboratory.
  • Nominees who have positively influenced the organizational culture within Argonne by promoting DEIA principles and fostering a sense of belonging and respect among colleagues.
  • Nominees demonstrate innovative strategies or initiatives that address the unique needs and challenges of promoting DEIA within Argonne.
  • Nominees who have demonstrated sustained efforts and ongoing dedication to promoting DEIA within Argonne over time.
  • Nominees who empower underrepresented voices within Argonne and promote diverse representation in decision-making processes.

Nomination Process:

  • Nominations for the Argonne AET DEIA Impact Award can be submitted by Argonne employees who have firsthand knowledge of the nominee's DEIA efforts within the laboratory.
  • Self-nominations are also encouraged.
  • Nominators are required to complete a nomination form, providing detailed information about the nominee's achievements, impact, and adherence to the nomination criteria.
  • A selection committee comprising AET leadership and AET DEIA council members and volunteers will review and evaluate the nominations based on the established criteria.
  • The winner of the Argonne DEIA Impact Award will be announced and celebrated within Argonne, with opportunities for them to share their experiences and best practices with colleagues.

Timeline:

  • Nomination opens May 6, 2024
  • Award announcement: AET All-Hands Meeting in August 2024

Join Our Next AET All-Hands Meeting and Celebrate Our Directorate's 2-Year Anniversary

Thursday, May 2 at 11 a.m.

Building 362, Auditorium or via Teams

Our next AET All-Hands meeting will be next Thursday, May 2 from 11 a.m. to noon CT. During the meeting, staff across all divisions, with differing types of jobs and levels of responsibility, will talk about our Argonne core values of respect and integrity. We’ll also explore the ways in which we can value and demonstrate safety, teamwork, and impact. The meeting will be held in the Building 362 Auditorium or on Teams.

Following the All-Hands, join us for a special Cinco de Mayo-themed lunch marking AET’s two-year anniversary from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in the Building 362 lobby! As part of the celebration, attendees will be invited to add their touches to a bench that will become part of the Core Values series featured around campus.

Renewable Energy Presenter Requested on Wednesday, May 8 during various times

Location: 4-H Camp in Monticello, IL

  • Envirothon is a natural resources-related competition for high school students. Students hear presentations and are tested on five different categories: aquatics, wildlife, soils, forestry and a revolving 5th category. This year's 5th category is "Renewable Energy for a Sustainable Future." The organizer is seeking a Renewable Energy presenter for Wednesday, May at the 4-H Camp in Monticello, IL. The presenters would like for the presentation to be based on the Renewable Energy for a Sustainable Future study guide that is provided to students in the study materials of the IL Envirothon website.

STEM Fair on Thursday, May 9 from 5:30 pm. - 7 p.m.

Location: Scullen Middle School, Naperville, IL

  • Invitation for community partners to participate in the fair by setting up an interactive and engaging display for science fair participants and their families.

Conversations with Kearns

Thursday, May 2nd at 9:00 a.m.

These informal forums are an ideal opportunity to ask questions, voice concerns, and connect with lab leadership and fellow colleagues. Reservations are required. Register to attend.

ABLED — Mental Health & Wellness Peer Support Group 

Thursday, May 2 at 12:00 p.m.

This hour is open to all seeking to connect with others and to discuss mental health and wellness. This safe, supportive group offers employees a chance to network, share resources, as well as give and receive support. Meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month. Join on Teams

Argonne Mentoring Program Informational Session #1

Monday, May 6 at 11:00 a.m.

All employees are invited to attend an informational session to learn about the Argonne Mentoring Program for employees.  Mentor and mentee enrollment is open from May 13 through June 28. As a key component of the lab’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility strategy, the Argonne Mentoring Program supports our goal to expand access to career development for all employees. Mental Health and Substance Abuse Education & Resource Fair

Wednesday, May 8 from 11:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Building 213 (Cafeteria)

Argonne’s Health and Employee Wellness (HEW) program will host a Mental Health and Substance Abuse Education & Resource Fair. The event is being held to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Month, observed every year since 1949 in May. In addition to educational material and resources, representatives from Argonne and community organizations will be on hand to answer questions and provide information on services that are available to employees and their families.  

ABLED — Working with a Chronic Illness Support Group

Wednesday, May 8 at 12 p.m.

This group is open to the entire Argonne community of employees who live with a chronic illness. Our focus is on supporting individuals managing chronic illness. This group may later evolve to include those caring for loved ones with chronic illness and allies. Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month at Noon. Join on Teams

Spectrum ERG Monthly Meeting

Thursday, May 9 at 12 p.m.

Meetings are held on the second Thursday of every month. Spectrum is an employee resource group (ERG) dedicated to building awareness and providing resources for those in the laboratory community who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, agender, or allies to their LGBTQIA+ peers. Spectrum also recognizes and encourages the incredible diversity of gender identities and sexual orientations, including those which may not be accurately portrayed in some of these terms. Spectrum is dedicated to fostering an environment of understanding, acceptance, and equality for all within the laboratory community. Join on Zoom

PACE — Parenting and Caregiving ERG Lunch Meeting

Monday, May 13 at 12 p.m.

PACE hosts informal virtual lunch meetings every second Monday of the month. Everyone is welcome. Topics will be announced before the meeting in the Slack channel and through the group’s mailing listJoin on Zoom

Argonne African American (AAA) ERG Monthly Meeting

Tuesday, May 14 at 11:30 a.m.

Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month. Join on Teams

ABLED — Parenting on the Spectrum Support Group

Wednesday, May 15 at 12:00 p.m.

The group is geared toward parents who are raising children on the autism spectrum or have other related disorders, such as Fragile X, Downs Syndrome, anxiety, etc. We meet the third Wednesday of every month at noon on Teams. Join on Teams

Open to cancer patients, survivors, and caretakers, the group aims to offer a compassionate forum for sharing ideas and advice and lending encouragement. In keeping with our core values of respect and teamwork, the group allows members to support colleagues with similar experiences. This meeting is held the fourth Thursday of every month. DOE Basic Energy Science Early Career Network: Grant Writing Tips and Insights

Tuesday, May 30 at 12 p.m.

The grant writing process can be daunting for early career scientists. In this webinar, we will have experts share their insights and experience on structuring the grant, the writing process, and building a compelling narrative.
