Nonproliferation, national security, nuclear energy, infrastructure resilience and climate teams from Argonne earn Secretary of Energy Honor Awards

Researchers from Argonne are part of six groups that received 2023 Secretary of Energy Honor Awards on Feb. 20, 2024. The awards are considered among the highest forms of recognition that can be bestowed by DOE. Secretary of Energy, Jennifer Granholm recognized the impact of award-winning teams with unique specialties but common and ​“amazing purposes."

Register to attend the Director’s Special Colloquium and mix-and-mingle event (March 7)

Haiyan Gao, associate laboratory director for nuclear and particle physics at Brookhaven National Laboratory, and professor of physics at Duke University, will present ​“Electron-Ion Collider” at a Director’s Special Colloquium on Thursday, March 7, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in Building 240, Room 1416, and virtually via Vimeo. Registration is requested. 

Employees are also invited to participate in a “mix-and-mingle” event where complimentary coffee and donuts will be served.

Argonne hosts 22nd annual Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day

On Feb. 15, Argonne hosted the 22nd annual Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day. The event gave eighth-grade girls a unique opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at Argonne, including touring labs and facilities, talking to scientists and engineers, and participating in hands-on activities. The event was hosted by Argonne’s Women in Science and Technology employee resource group.

Argonne’s Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) program drives innovation by supporting the development of transformative ideas that have the potential to lead to new, sponsor-funded research and development programs. This call offers the opportunity to seek FY24 funding under the Innovate-Seed component of the LDRD program.

Celebrate Women’s History Month

March is Women's History Month. To help celebrate, Argonne’s Women in Science and Technology (WIST) employee resource group (ERG) is highlighting the "Lost Women of the Manhattan Project" podcast by the Lost Women in Science Initiative. The podcasts were based on the book "Their Day in the Sun" by physicists Ruth Howes and Caroline Herzenberg. Both Ruth and Caroline worked at Argonne, and Caroline helped start the WIST ERG.

Local charities awarded $4.5K at Argonne Combined Appeal ceremony

On Feb. 22, six local charities were recognized at a celebration where they received $4,500 from funds collected during the 2023 Argonne Combined Appeal (ACA) raffle. For more than two decades, Argonne employees and retirees have raised more than $5.5 million to benefit local charities that serve our community. 

In memoriam: Theodore Everett "Ted" Sterling

Ted Sterling, 88, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2024. Ted worked at Argonne for 36 years, retiring as manager of computer aided design and engineering. He was on the board of directors of the Argonne Credit Union for 10 years serving as chairman for two years. While working at Argonne, he received the Argonne Pacesetter and Outstanding Performance awards.
