Dear colleagues,

A few slots remain for the in-person, AET-focused Conversations with Kearns this Thursday, April 13. Register now to take advantage of face-to-face time with our Laboratory director.

I hope you will also join me next Tuesday, April 18, from 2:00–3:00 p.m., for the AET All-Hands meeting. The meeting will be hosted in the Building 362 Auditorium and online. Those joining in person are invited for refreshments starting at 1:40 p.m. in the lobby.

At our meeting, we will provide updates on safety, hiring for AET leadership positions, and plans underway for an AET DEI council (separate from NTNS) starting in FY24. Also joining us will be John Harvey, Commercialization Programs Manager with Science & Technology Partnerships and Outreach, who will talk about how to apply for the next cohort of the Launchpad program. The application period opens next month.

Also on the agenda are updates on the Advanced Photon Source upgrade and the Aurora supercomputer and specifically how AET will be able to leverage these new tools to solve energy, mobility, materials, and manufacturing challenges. I look forward to seeing you at the all-hands meeting.

Best regards,

Seth

Sign up by Monday, May 1

On Saturday, May 20, 2023, Argonne will host its first open house since 2016. It’s an opportunity for our families, friends, and local residents to see firsthand how our science and technology research impacts the world. Planning and preparation is well underway, but we need your help to ensure the success of this event.

Please sign up by completing the Open House Safety Uniform and Staffing Sign Up by Monday, May 1.

When you sign up, you’ll choose from three staffing options:

  • Operations staff: These employees will perform jobs related to their daily duties (i.e., custodial, building managers, security, etc.). Shifts for these roles will be assigned by your supervisor.
  • Activity staff: These employees will support the many activities and tours focused on our public visitors. Choose this option if you have been asked to participate by the coordinator of an activity/tour or your supervisor.
  • General event staff: These roles are open to all employees. Opportunities include welcoming guests at entry gates, monitoring parking lots and shuttle stops, providing customer service at pavilions and information tents, or helping wherever assistance may be needed. Sign-up for these roles is first-come, first-served, and you are invited to support one or multiple shifts. If you select a general event staff role, you will receive instructions about how to choose a specific activity and time slot in the Volunteer Management System.

For all options above, once we have processed your request, you’ll receive further instructions if you indicate that you plan to bring family members to the event.

MEDIA HIGHLIGHT

Walmart to add EV charging to thousands of stores by 2030

Walmart said it will add electric-vehicle charging to thousands of its U.S. stores by 2030, on the belief that EV adoption is reaching a tipping point.

map maintained by the federally funded Argonne National Lab shows there are still many highway corridors outside of big cities that lack regular EV charging stops.

Charging infrastructure until now has been a “chicken and egg problem,” but as EV adoption grows, the outlook is shifting, Yan Zhou, a charging expert at Argonne, said in an interview.
