Military OneSource is committed to helping you get all the military-specific tax deductions and credits you have earned. This is why our MilTax tax prep and e-filing software is 100% free with no hidden surprises, and addresses situations specific to military life. It is now available on Military OneSource.
As you prepare your taxes, here are a few tax tips to keep in mind:
-
Consider the better deal: Depending on your circumstances, it may be worth taking the standard deduction, rather than itemizing. For 2019, the standard deduction increased to $12,200 for single filers, $24,400 for married couples filing jointly and $18,350 for heads of household.
-
File in the same state: A military spouse may be able to keep their state of residency the same as that of their service member's, regardless of which state they live in when filing taxes.
-
Attention Reservists: If travel for your reserve-related duties takes you more than 100 miles each way, you can deduct any unreimbursed travel expenses.
