Good Outfit: The 803rd Engineer Battalion and the Defense of the Philippines, 1941–1942 by Paul W. Ropp. The 803rd Engineer (Aviation) Battalion (Separate) holds a unique place in the history of the US Army and US Army Air Force. They were hastily thrown together with minimal training, and the first aviation engineer unit deployed to “foreign” posts (i.e., outside the continental United States) into what became the European and the Pacific Theaters of Operation. This book highlights the difficulty of establishing and maintaining expeditionary airfields in a contested environment.
