Smoke rolls out of an expended artillery round as Army Sgt. Flint Elsik extracts the shell from a howitzer during a live-fire exercise on Fort Bragg, N.C., Aug. 24, 2012. The paratroopers, who conducted the defensive exercises to prepare for a Joint Readiness Training Center rotation in October, are part of America's Global Response Force.
