This week at Commerce,
Secretary Penny Pritzker participated at the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit
in Laguna Niguel, CA, where she highlighted some of the Department of
Commerce’s efforts to support U.S. businesses. During her question and
answer session with Nina Easton, Fortune’s Senior Editor, Secretary Pritzker
noted that in her first year at the Commerce Department, she has visited 25
countries on behalf of American companies and met with more than 1,200 business
leaders, including more than one-third of the Fortune 500. Back in DC, she
spoke with the U.S.-India Business Council about the potential to build
partnerships, promote more trade, and create greater prosperity in both
countries.

participants on the President’s Export Council commercial diplomacy trip with
Secretary Pritzker to Poland and Turkey wrote about their experiences and what

Around Commerce, the
Census Bureau is in full swing preparing for the next decennial census. Under
Secretary Sullivan wrote about NOAA’s efforts to increase the climate

their efforts in promoting economic growth and job creation.

Pritzker Speaks at the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit- Secretary Penny
Pritzker participated in a panel discussion at the Fortune Most Powerful Women
Summit, where she discussed the economy and steps the U.S. government and
private sector can take to spur economic growth and job creation.

on Commerce - The Spotlight on Commerce series continues with Efraín
González, Chief Financial Officer and Chief Administrative Officer,
BusinessUSA; Sara Rosario, Census Scientific Advisory Committee Coordinator; Aaron

Enhancing the Climate Resilience of America’s Natural
Resources- Under Secretary Sullivan writes that the Priority
Agenda is one part of an ongoing strategy to implement the President’s Climate
Action Plan, and make the nation better prepared for the impacts of climate
change. The Agenda builds upon the robust climate change adaptation work
already underway by federal agencies, including NOAA, and identifies
significant actions moving forward.
MBDA National Director Alejandra Castillo Challenges
Young Latina Entrepreneurs to Think Big- Last week, Alejandra Castillo, the first Hispanic American woman
appointed as the National Director of the Minority Business Development Agency,
participated in a panel discussion at the Latinas Think Big Innovation Summit
at Google’s Mountain View Campus. The Summit brought together thought leaders,
entrepreneurs, innovators and influencers to exchange ideas, address important
issues, and connect attendees to high-caliber networks.
Chief Economist Sue Helper Celebrates Manufacturing Day
at The Rodon Group- The Rodon Group is a great
example of a manufacturer that operates effectively in America. Michael Araten,
Rodon president and CEO, delivered opening remarks about his company’s
experience reshoring from China and the importance of manufacturing in America.
President’s Export Council Travels to Poland and Turkey
About Growing Economic Opportunities For All- Michele Cahn wrote that the outcome of the mission was to help stimulate
business in Poland and Turkey and help increase exports from the U.S. and
combined, that means economic and job growth in Turkey, Poland and the United
States.
Preparing for
the 2020 Census: Measuring Race and Ethnicity in America- Census Bureau
Director John Thompson writes that preparations for the 2020 Census include
researching approaches that more accurately measure and reflect how people
self-identify their race and ethnic origin.
President’s Export
Council Espouses Commercial Diplomacy- Robert Wolf wrote that during the PEC
commercial diplomacy trip he wore two hats: one as an ambassador for US
businesses broadly promoting the President’s National Export Initiative and US
foreign direct investment priorities and, second, as a businessman in
representing a cross-border advisory on a fact finding mission to explore
Poland and Turkey as good places to enhance our business relationships and our
client’s growth initiatives.

Doing Business in Canada- Canada is the largest single export market for the
U.S. and is a highly receptive market for U.S. goods and services. The North
American Free Trade Agreement and Canada’s geographic proximity have afforded
U.S. firms with a significant advantage in selling to Canada’s markets.
NIST Laser Comb System
Maps 3D Surfaces Remotely for Manufacturing, Forensics- Researchers at
the National Institute of Standards and Technology have demonstrated a
laser-based imaging system that creates high-definition 3D maps of surfaces
from as far away as 10.5 meters.
NOAA Ship Thomas
Jefferson celebrates survey success with maritime community- From 2005
through today, NOAA Ship Thomas Jefferson has been surveying Long Island Sound,
one project area at a time. Some of the area was last surveyed between the late
1800s and 1939.
August 2014 sales
of merchant wholesalers were $453.9 billion, down 0.7 percent (+/-0.4%)
from last month. End-of-month inventories were $538.0 billion, up 0.7 percent
(+/-0.4%) from last month.

On Monday, Secretary Pritzker will
discuss Internet governance issues during the Internet Corporation for Assigned
Names and Numbers’ (ICANN) 51st Public Meeting in Los Angeles, CA. Assistant
Secretary of Commerce for Communications and Information and National
Telecommunications and Information Administration Administrator Lawrence E.
Strickling will also attend the meeting.
Also on Monday, Secretary Pritzker will
travel to Silicon Valley to meet with shared economy companies, startup
investors, executives from the electronic gaming industry, and technology
business leaders to discuss the Department of Commerce’s data and innovation
priorities. She will describe how the Department of Commerce is supporting
innovation ecosystems and entrepreneurship in the United States and working to
promote a strong patent system, making investments in regional business
incubators, expanding access to broadband, developing technology standards, and
building entrepreneurship programs.
On Tuesday, scientists from National
Centers for Coastal Ocean Science will sail on the NOAA research ship Okeanos
Explorer in collaboration with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to
collect sediment samples in the Gulf of Maine in search of cysts of the harmful
algae, Alexandrium fundyense. Data collected
during the mission will improve forecasting red tide events along the New
England coast in the coming year.
On Wednesday, Mark Doms, Under Secretary
of Commerce for Economic Affairs will
join Jen van der Meer, Chief Strategy Officer at Luminary Labs, for a fireside
chat entitled: "Government Statistics in the Era of Big Data" at the
Strata + Hadoop World Conference in New York City.
On Thursday, MBDA Office of Business
Development Chief Joann Hill, will participate in the Miami MBDA Business
Center’s 32nd Annual MED Week Conference. Joann will deliver
remarks during their luncheon. The theme of the conference is Connecting
Business with Opportunity.
Starting on Friday, USPTO will host the
National Trademark Expo at the USPTO campus in Alexandra, VA. The Expo is
designed to educate the public about trademarks and their importance in the
global marketplace.
Secretary
Pritzker met with Mary Barra, Patty Sellers and Nina Easton at the
Fortune's Most Powerful Women Summit.
