Good afternoon,

Today, EDA is releasing its outcomes from Phase 1 of the Tech Hubs Program. As part of the President’s Investing in America agenda, the Tech Hubs Program exemplifies place-based economic development strategies at their best: combining federal resources with regional assets and expertise to deliver transformational opportunities.

These Tech Hubs are located across 32 states and Puerto Rico, and represent a cross-section of urban and rural regions. Designation is an endorsement of the region’s plans to supercharge their respective technological industries to create jobs, strengthen U.S. competitiveness, and protect national security. The Tech Hubs announced today focus on industries ranging from autonomous systems, quantum computing, biotechnology, precision medicine, clean energy advancement, semiconductor manufacturing, and more, and highlight how the Biden Harris Administration is investing in innovation and economic growth in every region of the United States.

EDA also awarded 29 Strategy Development Grants (SDG) to help communities significantly increase local coordination and planning activities. Such development could make selected grantees more competitive for future Tech Hubs funding opportunities.

Please see the announcement below and reach out to techhubs@eda.gov with any questions.

All the best,

The Office of Public Engagement
U.S. Department of Commerce

Biden-Harris Administration Designates 31 Tech Hubs Across America

The U.S. Economic Development Administration is thrilled to announce outcomes from Phase 1 of the Tech Hubs Program! The Tech Hubs Program exemplifies place-based economic development strategies at their best: combining federal resources with regional assets and expertise to deliver transformational opportunities. By growing these new centers of innovation throughout America – beyond current concentrations in a few major metros – the Tech Hubs Program will help strengthen U.S. economic and national security.

The nearly 400 applications that responded to this call to action impressed our team with the breadth and depth of technology innovation, consortia partnerships, and thoughtful approaches to ensuring technology-based economic development is regionally inclusive. These applications offered clear evidence of why the United States is, and will remain, the global innovation center.

After weeks of diligent review, today at 2:15pm ET the President will announce the Designation of 31 Tech Hubs, which will be eligible to apply for implementation funding through Phase 2 of the program, and 29 Strategy Development Grants to help a consortium either develop its Phase 2 strategy or lay the groundwork for a possible future Tech Hubs Designation.

Click here to read today’s press release and tune in here at 2:15pm to watch the announcement.

We also welcome you to join us next Friday, November 3rd at 2pm ET for a Tech Hubs Program webinar, during which we will overview Phase 1 outcomes and what to expect in the coming months. Please register here and share these details with your colleagues and network who are interested in the program's development.
