CYBER CRIMES | HSI investigation leads to seizure of 9th fraudulent COVID-19 website

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland has seized “freevaccinecovax.org” which purported to be the website of an actual biotech company developing a vaccine for COVID-19, but instead was allegedly used to collect the personal information of individuals visiting the site in order to use the information for nefarious purposes, including fraud, phishing and deployment of malware. CHILD EXPLOITATION | HSI asks community to help identify potential victims of international fugitive

HSI special agents are seeking the public’s assistance to identify potential victims of a former preschool teacher convicted of child exploitation. Paul Torres Jimenez De La Cuesta, 29, of Imperial Beach, California, pleaded guilty April 5 to distribution of images of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Read more

OPERATIONAL | Phoenix special agent honored with prestigious FBI award for helping combat crime

An HSI special agent was honored with the FBI Director’s Award for Distinguished Service to the Law Enforcement Community by the FBI’s Phoenix field office April 29. The special agent was one of 13 members of the Central Arizona Safe Trails Task Force to be recognized with the award. Read more
