HSI | El Chapo sentenced to life plus 30 years

HSI, others bring drug kingpin to justice

Joaquin Archivaldo Guzman Loera, known as “El Chapo” and “El Rapido,” was sentenced in New York on July 17, 2019, to life imprisonment plus 30 years for being a principal leader of the Mexican organized crime syndicate known as the Sinaloa Cartel. The court also ordered Guzman Loera to pay $12.6 billion in forfeiture. The sentence follows an investigation, which led to his extradition to the U.S. to face charges and eventual conviction, by ICE HSI New York and Arizona and the DEA, with assistance from the US Marshals Service, the FBI, and the NYPD. Learn more

Human Smuggling | Texas bail bondswoman sentenced for smuggling illegal aliens

HSI New York uncovers plot

Following an investigation by ICE's HSI division in New York, Hema Patel, 51, a Texas-based bail bondswoman, was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for her role in smuggling hundreds of illegal aliens into the U.S. Patel was also ordered to forfeit her Texas residence, two hotels, $7.2 million in bail bonds, $400,000 in cash and 11 gold bars, among other assets. Patel pleaded guilty to alien smuggling for financial gain by fraudulently bonding illegal aliens from immigration custody and causing their release into the U.S. Learn more.

HSI | R. Kelly charged with illegal sexual activity

HSI New York and Chicago, NYPD investigate case

R&B singer “R. Kelly” was arrested in Chicago July 11, 2019, following an investigation by the joint HSI New York and NYPD Public Safety Task Force and special agents with HSI Chicago. Kelly was also charged in a separate federal indictment unsealed in the Northern District of Illinois with federal child pornography and obstruction charges.
