Reminder: New Fees Take Effect June 24

Last month, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published a final rule to adjust fees charged by SEVP to international students, exchange visitors and SEVP-certified schools. The final rule is available on the Federal Register and will take effect 12 a.m. EDT June 24, 2019. For more information on how the new fee rule impacts you, visit the Study in the States blog.

Students: Watch How You Can Pay the I-901 SEVIS Fee

Regulation requires all prospective F and M students to pay the I-901 Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) Fee before the U.S. Department of State issues a student visa. Watch this video tutorial to learn more about how to pay the I-901 SEVIS Fee.

Students: File Your Form I-539 Online to Extend Your Stay

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced in May 2019 that certain F and M students may use an online version of the Form I-539, “Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status,” to apply for an extension of their stay in the United States. Visit Study in the States to learn more about who may apply online and where to apply.

Read the New Policy Guidance on Recruiters and the Form I-20

On June 4, 2019, SEVP published a policy guidance document on Form I-20 Issuance and School Use of Recruiters. This new policy guidance clarifies that for reasons of privacy, security and fraud prevention, the Form I-20, “Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Students,” must be issued directly by SEVP-certified schools to nonimmigrant students, their dependents or, for minors, their parent or guardian. The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) is the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) program that administers the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). It ensures that government agencies have essential data related to nonimmigrant students and exchange visitors to preserve national security. SEVP provides approval and oversight to schools authorized to enroll F and M nonimmigrant students and gives guidance to both schools and students about the requirements for maintaining their status.
