The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), administered by FEMA, has paid policyholders over $1.4 billion for flood losses stemming from Hurricane Helene recovery, with more than 56,000 policyholders having filed claims following the storm’s landfall.
FEMA estimates Hurricane Helene could potentially result in losses between $3.5-$7 billion in flood insurance claims. These estimates are FEMA’s projections as of Nov. 12, 2024, and are subject to change. The losses include flood insurance claims received from six states, with the majority of claims coming from Florida.
Of the amount paid, more than $520 million has been in the form of advance payments, where policyholders may receive up to $20,000 prior to a visit from an insurance adjuster. Advance payments give policyholders flexibility to begin working on their recovery as they finish their claims.
FEMA announced on Oct. 10 that certain NFIP policyholders in Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia who had flood damage from Helene had until Nov. 26, 2024, to renew their policies. This was an increase from the standard 30-day renewal grace period. Certain policyholders in Florida have until Dec. 10, 2024 to renew policies due to an additional extension from Hurricane Milton.
Policyholders in Florida who wish to take advantage of the grace period should contact their agent or insurance company today. Policyholders who do not have their insurance agent or company’s contact information should call 877-336-2627 for assistance.

FEMA's Continuous Improvement Technical Assistance Program (CITAP) will host a webinar on best practices for following up on actions identified from reviews of real-world incidents. Action tracking is the process of monitoring the steps necessary to address and resolve issues highlighted in reviews after an incident. By effectively tracking these actions, organizations can enhance their emergency response strategies for future incidents. This webinar will provide valuable insights on how to implement action tracking to improve overall preparedness and response.
The webinar is from 1-2 p.m. ET on Thursday, Dec. 5, and will focus on action tracking (or issue resolution) as outlined in FEMA’s National Continuous Improvement Guidance.
During this webinar, CITAP will outline three approaches for action tracking and consider best practices and challenges of tracking actions from after-action reviews. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about fundamental concepts for effective action tracking. Building knowledge of how to approach action tracking can help sustain strengths, codify best practices and address areas for improvement identified during real-world incident after-action reviews. Participants will also be introduced to action tracking resources available on the CITAP’s website on the FEMA Preparedness Toolkit.
The webinar is designed to support the development of state, local, Tribal Nation and territorial partners, non-governmental organizations and private sector organizations with continuous improvement capabilities in emergency management.
Register in advance by visiting the webinar’s event page on FEMA.gov and clicking the "Register" button. If an issue arises while registering or logging in, please contact the FEMA CITAP Team at FEMA-CITAP@fema.dhs.gov.

The frequency and severity of disasters, as well as disaster losses, are expected to increase over the coming decades. Emergency managers are key to bringing different parts of the community together to comprehensively address climate adaptation, in both day-to-day planning and long-term strategies. Working together through unified engagement efforts produces better, more actionable plans that benefit the entire community.
This past Earth Day (April 22), FEMA released the “Climate Adaptation Planning: Guidance for Emergency Managers” (en español). The guide helps emergency managers incorporate climate adaptation into emergency management planning efforts and the structure is designed to walk state, local, Tribal Nation and territorial partners through a the Six-Step Planning Process, as identified in “Comprehensive Preparedness Guide 101: Developing and Maintaining Emergency Operations Plans.”
There is now a short video summarizing how emergency managers can incorporate climate into the Six Step Planning Process. Supporting documents are also now available in both English and Spanish. These include an Executive Summary (en español), a two-page outline on the six-step planning process for climate (en español) and a standalone federal resources document (en español).
To access the guide and supporting video and English and Spanish documents, and for other Planning Guides, visit the Planning Guides on FEMA.gov.
As a business owner, you face a variety of risks that can threaten the continuity of your operations – disasters, cyberattacks, equipment failures and more.
