Application Period Open for the National Dam Safety Program State Assistant Grant

FEMA announced that the Fiscal Year 2023 National Dam Safety Program, State Assistance Grants funding opportunity is published in Grants.gov. The application period will close July 21.

The $6.25 million available through the State Assistance Grant Program will provide financial assistance to the states and territories to strengthen their dam safety programs. The grant is funded by the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act of 2023.

Eligible activities include but are not limited to:

  • Dam safety training for state personnel.
  • Increase in the number of dam inspections.
  • Increase in the submittal and testing of emergency action plans.
  • More timely review and issuance of permits.
  • Improved coordination with state emergency preparedness officials.
  • Identification of dams to be repaired or removed.
  • Conduct dam safety awareness workshops and creation of dam safety videos and other outreach materials.

In a state or territory with an enacted dam safety program, the state administrative agency, or an equivalent state agency, is eligible to apply for the state assistance grant. Each eligible state or territory may submit only one grant application.

Dams are a critical part of our nation's infrastructure, and everyone enjoy the benefits they provide, including flood protection, water supply, hydropower, irrigation and recreation. However, dam structures are aging and many are deteriorating across the nation, while downstream and upstream populations are increasing.

State and territories are encouraged to apply if they meet all requirements stated within the funding opportunity announcement posted on Grants.gov.

The National Dam Safety Program helpline is available 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. ET, Monday - Friday. For questions, email FEMA-NDSP-HHPDGrants@fema.dhs.gov.

For more information, visit FEMA's Dam Safety webpage. For more information about the National Dam Safety Program, visit FEMA.gov.

FEMA will release a second funding opportunity later this year, which includes grant funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, to support State and Territory Dam Safety Offices.

New Map Details Historic Flood Insurance Claims

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is dedicated to helping every person within the United States understand the dangers of flooding.

Assessing flood risk is a very complex process. In support of that goal, FEMA produced a map on Floodsmart.gov that shows flood claims across the United States since 1980.

Viewers can sort historical flood insurance claims in every state, country and territory. There are also share functions to post the claims on social media or share them via email.

Flood claims are only one element of the risk calculus for any property. If a property does not have flood insurance through the NFIP, that incident is not included in this data.

The data helps to demonstrate flooding trends around the country. It also shows that flooding is not restricted to one part of the country.

Whether they live inside or outside of a high-risk flood area, property owners should consider purchasing flood insurance for the protection and peace of mind it brings. Visit www.floodsmart.gov and find an agent today.
