FEMA Shares Mitigation Success Stories

FEMA recently added two new stories to its Mitigation Best Practices webpage: one is about successfully financing coastal resilience and one describes how teamwork boosts outreach and engagement to lower flood risk.

Financing Coastal Resilience

Bourne, Massachusetts, experiences coastal flooding, erosion and severe storms. The town’s estuaries also have water quality issues. As a result, many high-priority projects must compete for limited funding. Building upon Bourne’s hazard mitigation plan, the planning team and partners developed a Coastal Resilience Financing Assessment report. This report established a financing system that provides a consistent source of seed funding for lower-cost projects as well as local match dollars for bigger projects.

Teamwork Approach to Outreach and Engagement Reduces Flood Risk

Tulsa, Oklahoma, used to be the nation’s most frequently flooded city. It now leads the nation in stormwater management and hazard risk reduction. For over 40 years, a dedicated team has promoted integrated planning, stronger regulations, outreach and education. The result is more citizen involvement, sound political leadership and wise long-term actions.

In addition to the Mitigation Best Practices, another comprehensive resource includes the Hazard Mitigation Planning Success Stories Story Map.  This story map highlights stories of communities across the United States that are becoming more resilient through outstanding hazard mitigation planning.

FEMA to Host Nonprofit Security Grant Program Webinars

FEMA, in partnership with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Center for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), is hosting a series of webinars for the Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 Nonprofit Security Grant Program. These webinars are for all nonprofit organizations interested in learning more about the program and its priorities, eligibility and application process.

Through a competitive process, the program provides funding support for facility hardening and other security enhancements to nonprofit organizations at high risk of a terrorist attack. The program also promotes emergency preparedness coordination and collaboration between public and private community representatives, as well as state, local, tribal and territorial governments.

FEMA and its partners are committed to providing quality customer service to all our partners including socially vulnerable, underserved and underrepresented communities.

Each webinar will present the same content, including:

  • Physical Safety and Security: Vulnerability Self-Assessment Information and Tools.
  • Nonprofit Security Grant Program Overview and FY 2021 Program Recap.
  • Preparation for the FY 2022 Nonprofit Security Grant Program: What Nonprofit Organizations Should Do Now.
