Application period ends for the 2020 Youth Preparedness Council (YPC)

FEMA Accepts Assistance to Firefighter Grants Applications

On Feb. 3, FEMA opened its application period for Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG). It will close on March 13 at 5 p.m. ET. There are $315 million in awards available for the 2019 fiscal year.

 

The AFG assists first-responder organizations by improving their capability to respond to fires and emergencies of all types.  For more information, visit the FEMA website.


FEMA Hosts Webinar Series "Making Mitigation Work"

FEMA has partnered with The Natural Hazards Center for a webinar series called "Making Mitigation Work." The free one-hour webinars highlight innovative mitigation policy, practice and research from subject matter experts. 

 

The next webinar will be held on Feb. 11 and will be hosted by Sara Grineski, Professor of Sociology and Co-Director of the Center for Natural and Technological Hazards at the University of Utah.  The webinar "How Mitigation Helped Houston Households in Hurricane Harvey," discusses how greater pre-event mitigation was associated with fewer physical health problems, lower post-traumatic stress and faster recovery times for survivors.

FEMA Releases PrepTalk on Power Outages

Today, FEMA released the PrepTalk “Left in the Dark: Power Outages in an Interconnected World.” The PrepTalk features Kate Konschnik who dives into the fundamentals of how electricity is generated in the United States. Konschnik explains how our aging electrical infrastructure increases the chances of catastrophic failures and she offers considerations for emergency managers to prepare their communities for extended power outages.

 

The PrepTalk video, an accompanying American Sign Language video, and additional resources are available on the FEMA website.

 

PrepTalks are a partnership between FEMA, the International Association of Emergency Managers, the National Emergency Management Association, the National Homeland Security Consortium, and the Naval Postgraduate School Center for Homeland Defense and Security.

FEMA Holds Additional Nonprofit Security Grant Program Webinars

FEMA is hosting a series of webinars focused on the Nonprofit Security Grant Program.  The grant program provides funding support for physical security enhancements to nonprofit organizations and promotes emergency preparedness coordination and collaboration between public and private community representatives as well as state and local government agencies.

 

Each webinar will present the same content, including an overview of the grant, information on program eligibility and allowable costs, and a moderated question and answer session.

 

The webinars will be held at 2:30 p.m. ET throughout the next two months.

FEMA Accepts Comments on New Building Code Policy

FEMA is accepting comments for the new draft policy regarding Section 1206, "Building Code and Floodplain Management Administration and Enforcement" of the Disaster Recovery Reform Act. Comments must be submitted using the accompanying comments matrix. Comments received during this period will be reviewed and considered for the final version of the guide.

FEMA Accepts Youth Preparedness Council Applications

FEMA is now accepting applications through March 8 for its 2020 Youth Preparedness Council (YPC) from students in grades 8-11. The YPC gives youth the chance to meet peers from across the county to work together on exciting projects. Members will also travel to Washington, D.C., for the annual YPC Summit. 

 

Since 2012, FEMA has brought youth together from across the U.S. who are passionate about preparedness and community service. 

 

As part of the YPC, members can build leadership skills, represent their schools and communities, and share perspectives, feedback, and opinions with FEMA.
