On Aug. 13, FEMA, in close coordination with experts across governmental agencies, academia and non-governmental organizations, released the National Mitigation Investment Strategy. The strategy is intended to improve the coordination and effectiveness of mitigation investments, defined as risk management actions taken to avoid, reduce or transfer risks from natural hazards.
This document provides a national, whole-community approach to investments in mitigation activities and risk management across federal, state, local, and tribal and territorial governments, as well as the private and non-profit sectors
Recommendations proposed in the strategy will reduce loss of life and injures, damage to property, and negative impacts to the economy and the environment, and lead the whole community in building a more resilient future.
This week, FEMA will award $30 million in supplemental humanitarian funding to the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program. The National Board will then reimburse local communities that have aided, on or after January 1, southern border migrants released from DHS custody.
Of the $30 million allocation, $25 million will go to the four states with the most significant influx of migrants: Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas. The remaining $5 million will be allocated to all states, including the border states, where significant numbers of migrants have also been assisted.
FEMA will hold a National Public Assistance Readiness Stand-Down on Aug. 20-22. This is a nationwide, all-hands event for Public Assistance personnel within FEMA operations. The stand-down will allow employees to focus on critical training for the delivery of Public Assistance grants during this hurricane season, and all current and future declared events.
Equipping Public Assistance personnel with the latest policy information and lessons learned will increase efficiency in customer service, project worksheet development, documentation collection, and ultimately, improve the delivery of funds to communities in need.
The stand-down will include a combination of all-hands interactive sessions and online working sessions at every FEMA facility with Public Assistance personnel. Many state partners will also participate in the event, in our efforts to better serve our stakeholders in their recovery operations.
FEMA Hosts Webinar on Hurricane Michael Recovery Advisories
FEMA will host two webinars to discuss recently-released Hurricane Michael Recovery Advisories on Thursday, Aug. 15. These Recovery Advisories assist various stakeholders in rebuilding more resiliently by providing design and construction guidance to help minimize damage from future storm events. The webinar is free and available to anyone interested in the topics and content.

FEMA Hosts Webinars on Evacuation and Shelter-in-Place Guidance
FEMA released "Planning Considerations: Evacuation and Shelter-in-Place- Guidance for State, Local, Tribal, and Territorial Partners". The document draws upon the collective experience of those partners to provide relevant concepts, principals, and guidance as a resource for emergency managers and planners.
FEMA’s National Integration Center is hosting a 60-minute webinars to discuss the document, related efforts, and answer participants’ questions.
