Developing Culture(s) of Preparedness:
The Important Role of Culture in FEMA’s Strategic Plan (2018-2022)
September 20, 2018 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. EDT
Description:
On May 22-23, 2018 twenty-nine academic and practitioner stakeholders met in Washington, DC at Georgetown University to discuss the role of culture in FEMA’s new Strategic Plan. The webinar invites disaster scholars and practitioner experts in disaster management to participate in a presentation of that FEMA Higher Ed workshop and report. We will discuss the meaning and implications of FEMA’s new strategic priority: to build a “culture of preparedness.” Specifically, we will present findings about the relevance of local community variations in the landscape of risk, the cultural practices and values that empower people to make sustainable preparedness choices, and the reasons past efforts to build a culture of preparedness have not met with desired levels of success.
