January is National
Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. The Department of
Homeland Security (DHS) Blue Campaign,
works in collaboration with law enforcement, to raise public awareness about
human trafficking and also outlines several steps to end it. Every DHS employee needs to know what human trafficking looks
like and who to call.
Jan. 11, is the Blue Campaign’s "Wear Blue Day" which is a day we can
all pledge our solidarity with victims of human trafficking and work together to
end this heinous crime.

This month, President
Obama authorized a 2.1 percent pay increase for all federal employees, which
goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2017. The 2.1 percent combines a 1.0 percent,
across-the-board base pay increase, and the revised 1.1 percent locality
payment increases.

Last month FEMA made great progress for pay parity among Stafford Act employees,
which includes Reservists, Incident Management (IM) Cadre of on Call
Response/Recovery Employees (CORE), and Incident Management Assistance Team
(IMAT) members. Establishing
pay parity across these positions is a critical step to improve our
incident workforce. Over the next few months, the Office of the Chief
Component Human Capital Officer (OCCHCO) and the Field Operations Directorate, (FOD)
will continue working together to ensure effective implementation of the new

Did you know eligible employees who refer a candidate to the
FEMA Reservist Program can receive a $100 bonus for helping the agency meet its
Reservist force structure goals? The FEMA Reservist Referral Bonus Program will
pay a bonus to current FEMA personnel who recruit new employees to hard-to-fill
Reservist positions. Information about the program, including eligibility and a
list of hard-to-fill positions, can be found on the Reservist Referral Bonus Program
website.

Steven Sims is a Project Specialist with the Public
Assistance Cadre. He is deployed to South Carolina, helping that state recover from Hurricane Matthew. Currently Steven is working on procedures to remove debris, to help clear public right of ways. In his seven years with FEMA, Steven has deployed to 24 disasters. He says he has a passion for traveling and enjoys helping people. "I get to see a lot of different places, but going home is my vacation," said Steven.
