Managing Officer Program: The Fire Administrator will soon be announcing a new program at the NFA, Managing Officer Program (M-O-P). The program is designed for first line to mid-level officers, and is modeled after the Executive Fire Officer Program, though the programs will not be related. The audience for the M-O-P is managers in fire and EMS, Fire Marshals, Public Educators and others involved in community public mitigation, prevention and response.
Students will be required to have an associate’s degree (regional or national accredited) or have completed 60 credits toward a bachelor’s degree and take a yet-to-be-determined number of on-line courses, classroom-based courses through their State Training system, and four 6-day, back-to-back, resident courses in Emmitsburg. Upon completion of the coursework, they will be required to complete a yet-to-be-determined project in their home departments. The project will be approved, supervised and evaluated by the head of their department.
We anticipate that the courses and admissions requirements will be determined at our next Board of Visitors meeting in April, after which the Fire Administrator will make the public announcement and specify the course and admissions requirements. The application period for the program will open October 15, close December 15, 2014 and we will admit our first class of 150 students in April, 2015. We’ll keep you posted as news becomes available.
Instructor Copiers: We have had a significant and expensive increase in the number of copies produced on our instructor copiers in J Building (J-112A and J-246). We understand you have copying needs, so please contact the Training Specialist for the course, and we can arrange to have large print jobs completed prior to the class. Please contact the Training Specialist at least three weeks in advance of the class so the contract staff has time to complete the printing jobs. Additional NFA materials are available upon request; you may contact the NFA Training Specialist. Please remember, you are not permitted to add course content without the Training Specialist’s authorization. If it is important for one class session, we want to capture it for all. Also, copyrighted materials are not permitted to be copied.
Java Issues with NFAOnline: As reported in last month’s newsletter, we are experiencing some issues with accessing NFAOnline. Attached is a document which will help assist you if you experience this problem.
National Professional Development Symposium: The 1st Annual National Professional Development Symposium (NPDS) will be held June 11-13, 2014 at the National Fire Academy. The symposium will feature presentations related to fire training and resources, fire and emergency services higher education, and fire prevention and protection.
