2. JPME stands for Joint Professional Military Education, a system
of education recommended for military members seeking professional
development. JPME is designed to provide service members with the
knowledge necessary to understand and contribute to joint operations
and inter-service collaboration. JPME is typically divided into
two phases:
    a. JPME-I: This phase is usually completed by officers at
intermediate and senior-level service colleges and covers
foundational joint learning objectives. DoD Course EJPME-I is
completed online at the link provided above (CAC enabled).
    b. JPME-II: This phase is often completed by officers through
advanced courses at the Joint Forces Staff College/War College
and focuses on more specialized aspects of joint operations.
DoD Course EJPME-II is completed online at the link provided above
(CAC enabled).
3. JPME is not addressed in any Coast Guard training course, nor
is it a requirement for advancement, promotion, or selection to
assignment. However, as focus and priorities continuously shift
there may be an increased desire or need for Joint-Service
education. JPME-1 is required for DoD senior service School's
such as MCWAR, Navy/Air/Army SLE (O6 War Colleges). Completion of
the program and any additional joint-service education increases
competitiveness in special assignments and may add to
competitiveness in future selection boards and panels.
DoD trainings, such as JPME-1, EJPME-I, EJPME-II, & additional
joint-service education, prepares our service members to meet the
interoperability demands consistently placed on the Coast Guard,
currently and throughout our prolific service history.
4. JPME-1 and EJPME-I & II programs are available at no-cost to the
member and Commands should encourage members to complete the
training in and outside of normal working hours, as operations and
duties permit, in support of professional development and the
development of our service. Once completed, the JPME_1 competency
code may be submitted for entry into officers' (O3 and above)
permanent records. The SEJPME1 & SEJPMEII competency codes may be
submitted for entry into appropriate Enlisted permanent records.
Junior enlisted, CWO's, ENS's, LTJG's, and Civilians who complete
the EJPME courses may submit an updated CG-4082, or Civilian
equivalent, to capture the training in their permanent records.
5. JPME-II is available to officers through existing Joint Forces
Staff College programs. Applicants should follow established CG
Advanced Education application protocols. Once completed, the
JPME_1 & JPME_II competency codes are available for entry into
members' permanent records.
6. Continuing joint-service education is available on the Joint
Knowledge Online platform (JKO-link above). A list of recommended
courses is available on the DPR-5 website as well as through the
Office of Counterterrorism & Defense Operations Policy (CG-ODO).
Any and all competency waivers are adjudicated by COMDT (CG-ODO)
(email below).
