FROM FIRSTS TO LASTING CHANGE
Coast Guard Headquarters recently hosted a panel to celebrate Women's Equality Day, featuring Coast Guard leaders who shared their experiences and insights on the event's theme "Inspire Inclusion: How Do We Get Beyond First to Equitable Representation." Panelists included Rear Adm. Tiffany Danko, Rear Adm. Zeita Merchant, and Capt. Jennifer Bowden. They discussed topics like mentorship and leadership and their messages emphasized the importance of belonging, authenticity, and embracing growth outside of comfort zones. TIPS FOR HANDLING WORKPLACE DISCRIMINATION
Discrimination can happen in any workplace, even if we don’t always see it. It's important to know how to recognize and address it when it occurs. The key is speaking up, offering support to those affected, creating space for open dialogue, and not letting incidents go unchecked. CONFLICT, COMMUNICATION, AND COLLABORATION: CONFLICT RESOLUTION DAY
Conflict Resolution Day is coming up on October 17th, and it's the perfect time to refresh your conflict resolution knowledge. Learn about the Coast Guard’s Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) program, which offers tools that can help resolve workplace disputes and strengthen teams. COAST GUARD MEMBERS RECOGNIZED BY NATIONAL AFFINITY ORGANIZATIONS
Bravo Zulu to three Coast Guard members who were recently recognized by National Affinity organizations. Federally Employed Women (FEW) honored Cmdr. Gretel Kinney and Ms. Gail Jackson and Blacks in Government (BIG) honored Cmdr. Roberto Concepcion for their impressive achievements in furthering civil rights and equal opportunity throughout the Coast Guard.
Cmdr. Gretel Kinney received the FEW Military Meritorious Service Award, which recognizes military service members who have made significant contributions to their Service and the nation. Ms. Jackson received the Latimer Award, which honors a member of FEW whose actions and leadership advanced the organization's mission at the chapter and/or regional level. AGE IS JUST A NUMBER
Age discrimination occurs when someone is treated unfairly in the workplace due to their age. This negative behavior can show up in various ways, from younger employees replacing older ones to older workers being passed over for promotions or professional development. COAST GUARD'S NEWEST CIVIL RIGHTS PROFESSIONALS RECEIVE TRAINING
The Civil Rights Directorate’s newest Civil Rights Service Providers (CRSPs) and regional leadership participated in Service Specific Training (SST) August 26 - September 6, 2024 at Coast Guard Headquarters. The two-week training introduced the participants to Coast Guard specific policies and requirements about Equal Opportunity and Equal Employment Opportunity (EO/EEO). SST prepares new Coast Guard civil rights professionals for their new assignments and equips them with the skills necessary to provide civil rights assistance to the workforce and help them serve as advisors to Commanding Officers and Officers in Charge on EO/EEO matters. Participants received hands on training and conducted educational scenarios in areas like understanding and implementing the complaint process; handling reasonable accommodations; alternative dispute resolution; Civil Rights Awareness training delivery; and much more. CELEBRATE NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
Join Coast Guard Headquarters on Wednesday, 18 September to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month which runs from 15 September to 15 October. U.S. Congressman Salud Carbajal, representative for California's 24th congressional district, will provide a keynote address beginning at 10:45 AM Eastern. He will share his story and thoughts on what celebrating Hispanic heritage means in today's society. You can stream the event on CG Teams using the link below.
You can also use the National Hispanic Heritage Month toolkit (CAC enabled) to help establish activities and opportunities for your unit to honor the achievements and contributions of Hispanic Americans to the Nation and Coast Guard.
