SUBJ: CDR ROBERTO CONCEPCION CITED FOR EXCELLENCE
1. The Coast Guard congratulates Commander (CDR) Roberto Concepcion,
Chief of Response, Sector Maryland National Capital Region, on his
selection for the Blacks in Government (BIG) Military Meritorious
Service Award for the Coast Guard. BIG recognized CDR Concepcion for
his achievements during the performance period of May 2023 to
April 2024.
2. CDR Concepcion's efforts are guided by his visible commitment,
humility, and cultural and emotional intelligence, as well as an
affinity for forming and maintaining strong relationships. Most
notably, the partnerships he formed or strengthened with several
Historically Black Colleges and Universities enhanced recruiting
for the College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative (CSPI) Program
and led to the addition of over 50 Minority Serving Institution
Ambassadors, significantly increasing minority officer recruitment
for the Coast Guard. CDR Concepcion also organized 18 professional
development Leadership Lecture sessions, connecting more than 6,000
junior officers and enlisted personnel with career development and
mentorship opportunities. Additionally, he was the driving force
behind a first-of-its-kind professional development symposium for
officers, which addressed key issues including the Commandant's
Accountability and Transparency Review and combating extremism. This
forum was attended by senior leaders across government and military
institutions, including the Secretary of the Department of Homeland
Security, the Coast Guard Commandant and Vice Commandant, and more
than 600 other individuals representing all branches of the sea
services.
3. CDR Concepcion continues to be a shining example of leadership
and the Coast Guard commends his achievements, which have left a
lasting impact across the Service. BIG will recognize CDR Concepcion
at their 45th Annual National Training Institute in Tampa, FL on
August 13, 2024.
