SUBJ: MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY - A NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE
1. On January 15, 2024, we celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. with a National Day of Service. Each year the recurring
theme is "Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On, Not a Day Off."
2. Dr. King’s vision for our Nation and his purposeful action to
bring about racial equality, justice, and freedom modeled the way
for all Americans to actively contribute to their communities. He
said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: what are you
doing for others?”
3. Every member of our Coast Guard workforce serves the Nation
through our missions to save lives, protect our national security,
and ensure our economic prosperity. Beyond that work, laws and
Executive Orders inform public service principles that call on
federal workforces to advance equity, support underserved
communities, and ensure access to government programs by all
Americans. By going out into the local community, or inviting the
community into our spaces, we connect with our neighbors and
demonstrate our core values of Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty
outside the lifelines of our Coast Guard duties.
4. One of the most powerful ways we can honor Dr. King's legacy of
service is to directly engage local communities by listening to
understand their traditions, needs, and challenges. These
conversations are an opportunity for meaningful interactions, to
help identify ways the federal government can remove unintended
barriers and improve equitable access to services, and to improve
the trust that is so vital to our democratic institutions. Engaging
our communities this way allows us to also share our Coast Guard
stories and create inroads to individuals who want to serve the
Nation as a member of our workforce.
