SUBJ: WOMEN'S EQUALITY DAY
1. Women's Equality Day commemorates August 26, 1920, when Secretary
of State Bainbridge Colby signed a proclamation certifying the 19th
Amendment to the Constitution, establishing equal voting rights for
women.
2. The famed Seneca Falls Convention of 1848, which sparked the
national women's rights movement, produced a Declaration of
Sentiments enumerating the unequal rights of women: suffrage,
education, legal standing as individuals and in marriage, to
property, employment, wages, and freedom from denigration of
self-worth. The Declaration's closing stated, "In entering upon
the great work before us, we anticipate no small amount of
misconception, misrepresentation, and ridicule; but we shall use
every instrumentality within our power to effect our object."
The signatures of 68 women and 32 men followed, including those of
the Declaration's primary author and Convention organizer
Elizabeth Cady Stanton and noted abolitionist Frederick Douglass.
3. Coast Guard mission execution depends on every member of our
workforce performing to their highest potential. Equality for women
is important to that goal, and there is more to accomplish. The
Coast Guard continues to advance programs to guarantee equal
employment opportunity and equal opportunity to our total workforce,
and to remove any remaining barriers to service for women. I urge
you to plan and participate in special observances to learn about
the women who helped advance equal rights in our Nation, and to
reflect on our enduring commitment to support and defend equality
for all. You can learn more by visiting the following pages:
