SUBJ: LIEUTENANT JONES BUTLER CITED FOR EXCELLENCE
1. Lieutenant (LT) Andre Jones Butler, Safety Officer, Aviation
Projects Acquisition Center (APAC), Air Station Elizabeth City, is
the Coast Guard (CG) recipient of the 2023 National Association for
the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Roy Wilkins Renown
Service Award.
2. LT Jones Butler dedication raised awareness of the Coast Guard
and provide unique opportunities for members of underrepresented
communities to join the Service. LT Jones Butler completed 11
Officer Candidate School and College Student Pre-commissioning
Initiative (CSPI) interviews and actively sought out talented
individuals from diverse backgrounds to enrich the Coast Guard's
talent pool and reinforce the Coast Guard's commitment to creating a
diverse organization. LT Jones Butler also mentored four cadets who
are currently at the Coast Guard Academy (CGA) and two CSPI officer
trainees, cultivating their personal and professional development.
LT Jones Butler is also an active member of the CGA's Minority
Outreach Team and Equity Core and Strategic Action Teams and his
input and leadership were instrumental to shaping plans and policies
that foster equity, diversity, and inclusion. LT Jones Butler formed
partnerships with the Pea Island Cook House Museum and the Urban
Renewal and Mentoring Extraordinary League of Gentlemen to expand
awareness about the Coast Guard mission for underrepresented
individuals to learn of the potential pathways available to them to
serve in the Coast Guard.
3. The Coast Guard commends Lieutenant Jones Butler for his
outstanding contributions, achievements, and exemplary service.
NAACP will recognize him at the 2023 NAACP Convention in Boston, MA,
from July 26 - August 1, 2023.
4. Civil Rights awards help maximize the Coast Guard's overall
mission effectiveness through recognition of members'
accomplishments and contributions to Civil Rights and Equal
Opportunity programs, including the Partnership in Education (PIE)
