SUBJ: GOLD ANCIENT MARINER SELECTION
1. I am pleased to announce the selection of CDR Donald S. Stiker as
the 17th Gold (Officer) Ancient Mariner since the inception of the
program in 1978. CDR Stiker will assume the title of Gold Ancient
Mariner from CAPT Patrick Culver during a ceremony held aboard
CGC THETIS in Key West, FL on 26 June 2023. CAPT Culver will be
retiring after 42 years of distinguished service.
2. CDR Stiker is currently the Executive Officer of the Polar
Security Project Resident Officer (PRO). He has over 16 years of sea
time while serving aboard 8 Coast Guard cutters. Notably, he served
as the pre-commissioning Engineer Officer of Coast Guard Cutter
KIMBALL (WMSL-756), Engineer Officer of CGC SHERMAN (WHEC-720),
Engineer Officer of CGC SEQUOIA (WLB-215), and completed tours of
duty onboard CGC JAMES RANKIN (WLM-555), CGC STATEN ISLAND
(WPB-1345), CGC WHITE SAGE (WLM-544), CGC MALLOW (WLB-396), and
CGC RUSH (WHEC-723).
3. The Ancient Mariner title recognizes the officer and enlisted
person with the earliest designation as a permanent cutterman and
requires a minimum of ten years of sea time. The award recipients
must personify and uphold the core values of honor, respect, and
devotion to duty, along with the professionalism and leadership
associated with long service at sea.
