SUBJ: JUNETEENTH - AN OPPORTUNITY FOR REFLECTION
1. In June 2021 Congress passed the Juneteenth National Independence
Day Act, which designated June 19th - "Juneteenth" - as a federal
holiday. It commemorates the proclamation made by U.S. Army soldiers
that arrived in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865. On that day these
soldiers decreed freedom for more than 200,000 Black Americans
enslaved in that state.
2. Also known as Emancipation Day, Juneteenth is an opportunity to
reflect on the cruelty of slavery and the long history of violence,
racism, and prejudice experienced by African Americans. It is also a
marker of hope and freedom, worthy of celebration in the form of
religious services, parades, family and community gatherings,
cookouts, educational events, and festivals across our great Nation.
3. In reflection and celebration, Juneteenth invites connection and
conversation. Our service strives to be representative of the Nation
we serve and is committed to ensuring justice and equality for the
total Coast Guard workforce. I encourage each of you to learn more
about the history of Juneteenth from the provided webpages, to come
together in activities that promote deeper understanding and
celebrate our holistic American culture and to build mutual respect
and inclusion. These are all essential to mission excellence.
