SUBJ: UPDATE TO POLICY FOR AWARD RECOMMENDATIONS, CERTIFICATES,
AND CITATIONS
A. Coast Guard Military Medals and Awards Manual, COMDTINST

1. This ALCOAST modifies REF (A) and will be incorporated in the
next update.
2. All military award recommendations, certificates, and citations
submitted on or after 1 Oct 2023, shall incorporate gender neutral
pronouns.
3. REF (A) will be updated to read as follows:
Chapter 1.G., Gender Neutral Pronouns. All military award
recommendations, certificates, and citations shall incorporate
gender neutral pronouns. Alternative language such as they, their,
them, and themselves may be used. Rank, rate, and last name may also
be used in place of gender specific pronouns. All other provisions
of REF (A) remain in effect.
4. Additional information and examples of various citations may be
