SUBJ: ANCIENT ALBATROSS AWARD SELECTION (OFFICER AND ENLISTED)
A. Recognition Programs Manual, COMDTINST M1650.26
1. The Ancient Albatross Award was established in 1966 to honor
the Coast Guard Aviator designated for the longest period of time.
In 1988, it was augmented to include the Enlisted Ancient Albatross
Award for the enlisted member with the earliest graduation date
from a class "A" school with a Coast Guard aviation rating.
Each award recipient is the embodiment of the dedication and
professionalism associated with long service to Coast Guard
Aviation. There have been 26 Ancient Albatrosses and 14 Enlisted
Ancient Albatrosses accorded this recognition.
2. I am pleased to announce that on 18 April 2023,
RADM Melvin Bouboulis transferred the honor and mantle of the
Ancient Albatross to RADM Christopher Bartz, and
AMTCM Shannon Fortune transferred the same of the Enlisted Ancient
Albatross to AMTCM Mark Leichenauer during a ceremony at
Air Station New Orleans.
3. As RADM Bouboulis and AMTCM Fortune prepare to transition
into retirement from active service, I send my most sincere
appreciation for their long and continued dedicated service to
Coast Guard Aviation and to our Nation.
4. I congratulate RADM Bartz and AMTCM Leichenauer on their
designations. In their capacity, I am certain they will ably
represent the rich traditions of Coast Guard Aviation and the
hundreds of Coast Guard aviators who provide daily support to
Coast Guard mission accomplishment.
