SUBJ: EIGHTY-SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF THE COAST GUARD RESERVE
1. A ready and capable Reserve Force is critically important to
Coast Guard mission execution, as it has been for 82 years since the
founding of the Coast Guard Reserve on February 19, 1941. Demand for
the Reserve has been steadily increasing and now expands into new
missions and roles. To meet the growing need, the Reserve must
continue to be a global, adaptive force that nimbly adjusts to
changing operational domains, shifting uses of the maritime
environment, and the evolving geopolitical landscape.
2. In 2022, the Reserve activated and deployed 1,372 reservists to
provide critical support to DoD, DHS, and Coast Guard missions
including the Hurricane Ian response, southwest border operations,
and Operation Allies Welcome. Additionally, in the past year, the
Reserve expanded into the aviation and cyber specialties, increased
support for the parental leave program by volunteering to backfill
for 126 new parents, and improved expertise through innovative
training to remain a versatile and ready force.
3. The Reserve workforce provides tremendous value to the American
people as they continue the tradition of mission excellence and
uphold a legacy of service. Today, we all join Rear Admiral Miriam
Lafferty (CG-R), and the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast
Guard - Reserve Timothy Beard, in expressing our gratitude for the
steadfast and patriotic service of every Reservist. Bravo Zulu and
Semper Paratus!
4. ADM Steven Poulin, Vice Commandant (VCG), sends.
