1. This message announces important updates for the second annual
Coast Guard Marathon, Half Marathon, and 5K, 2-4 March 2023
sponsored and managed by the Visit Elizabeth City (or
"visit E-City") race committee. The race again includes both virtual
and in-person options for the full marathon, half marathon, 5K, and
Semper Paratus Challenges. The race also will host elite athletes
attempting to qualify for the 2024 Olympics and the 2024 Boston
Marathon. Coast Guard District 5's CMC has challenged everyone to
join him at the race in a video here:

2. The 2023 CG Marathon/Half Marathon races will honor CG members
lost in the line of duty as well as our CG Gold Star families.
These races will also include a CG flyover, pacers to help
members meet their running goals, and numerous finish line CG static
displays. In addition, the Race Expo (sponsored by the Coast Guard
Exchange) and the weekend’s race events will include music from the
Coast Guard Band and performances by the Coast Guard Silent Drill
Team and Honor Guard.
3. This year's race finisher medals and race shirts feature the
45' RBM and a historic surfboat (circa 1910). Medal images can be

4. As with other athletic events, the Community Service Command's
MWR Sports Grant Program may be available to cover registration
costs. See REF (B) for the message announcing the 2023 program.
5. In accordance with REF (D), administrative absence to participate
in or volunteer for the event may be authorized for military members
subject to Commanding Officer approval.
6. Limited barracks berthing, MWR lodging, RV sites, and dry camping
may be available at Base Elizabeth City on a first come, first
served basis. The Base Elizabeth City point of contact for barracks
lodging is CWO2 McKenzie Shirley at Mckenzie.R.Shirley@uscg.mil.

7. The Coast Guard Marathon event has great potential for CG
recruiting, public affairs, external affairs, diversity and
inclusion efforts as well as supporting physical health choices and
encouraging good behavioral health. Commands should utilize the
disclosure in the next paragraph of this message when sharing
information about the race in email or through social media.

Registration is open and will close on 19 February 2023. Team
registration is also available. A 10% military discount is available
for all active, reserve, and retired members of the armed services.

8. The Coast Guard Marathon is hosted by Visit Elizabeth City, a
non-federal entity. Visit Elizabeth City has been licensed to use
the term "Coast Guard." The Coast Guard and the Department of
Homeland Security cannot and do not endorse any non-federal entity.
Information about this athletic event is being disseminated solely
for general information purposes and to promote the health and
well-being of Coast Guard personnel.
