SUBJ: CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH
1. Black History Month is an opportunity to celebrate the rich
history, culture, and contributions of Black Americans.
2. Throughout history, there are many examples of Black American
resilience in the face of adversity. Black veterans returning from
service in World War II faced discrimination and often violence in
their communities. Their stories inspired President Harry Truman to
desegregate the Armed Forces in 1948. This action facilitated the
future success of one of the most notable members of the U.S. Coast
Guard.
3. Chief Petty Officer Alex Haley pursued his dream and made it
reality despite facing systemic barriers early in his career.
Enlisting in 1939, Haley joined the Coast Guard when minorities were
limited to only a few ratings. While serving as a Mess Attendant and
Officer's Steward, Haley's passion and talent for writing were
readily apparent and his contributions to Coast Guard and national
publications received accolades. On June 29, 1949, shortly after
President Truman desegregated the Armed Forces, Haley changed
ratings to become a Journalist First Class. He retired in 1959 and
began a distinguished writing career, gaining international fame
with his book Roots: The Saga of an American Family, first published
in 1976. It was later presented as a groundbreaking television
miniseries that told the story of an 18th century African man who
was sold into slavery.
4. Black Americans' history, achievements, and struggles are
integral to American and Coast Guard histories. Learning about
and affirming these histories fosters a culture of dignity,
diversity, inclusivity, and respect that drives our mission success.
I encourage the workforce to participate in activities and
observances to celebrate African Americans and allies who have
inspired change in the past and those who continue to do so today.
