SUBJ: 2023 STUDENT ART CONTEST: PREVENTING MARINE POLLUTION
1. The annual student art contest sponsored by the North American
Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA), the U.S. Coast
Guard (USCG), and the Inter-American Committee on Ports of the
Organization of American States (CIP-OAS) is now open for
submissions.
2. All students in grades K-12 across the Americas (North, Central,
and South America and the Caribbean) are invited to participate.
Students living in other parts of the world who have a parent on
active duty in the USCG may also participate in the art contest.
3. The theme for this year's contest is "MARPOL at 50 - Our
Commitment Goes On" and focuses on preventing marine pollution. It
recognizes the importance of the International Convention for the
Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL Convention of 1973) that
was convened after the Torrey Canyon oil spill of 1967. Students
are asked to submit an original poster that depicts the history and
importance of protecting the planet and the ocean from the impact
of shipping pollution. For more information about the contest and

4. Entries must be made online by April 1, 2023 at 2359 EDT at the

5. Twelve finalists, six from grades K-5 and six from grades 6-12,
will be selected and notified by May 1, 2023. The winning artwork
will be retained and featured on the NAMEPA, USCG, and CIP-OAS
websites, and published in a twelve-month calendar that will be
printed in English and Spanish. You can view past winners on the

6. All finalists will receive a certificate and a calendar. Two
grand prize-winning artists (one from each grade category) will
receive a cash prize from NAMEPA and a USCG-themed package.
7. Coast Guard Partnership in Education (PIE) coordinators and
volunteers are asked to share this announcement and encourage
student participation in all local schools.
