Coast Guard rescues 7 people off Naples

MIAMI— The Coast Guard rescued seven people after their 180-foot motor vessel, Abshire Tide, became disabled, Monday, 150 miles southwest of Naples. 

Coast Guard Cutter Shrike's crew arrived on scene and embarked the seven people aboard, at approximately 3:30 p.m.

Coast Guard District Seven watchstanders received an emergency position indicating radio beacon distress signal, Sunday, at approximately 1:40 p.m.  

A Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater HC-130 Hercules aircrew located the vessel and dropped a radio to the people on the ship to establish communications. 

The vessel was left adrift. The owners are arranging for commercial salvage. Coast Guard watchstanders are using emergency group calling to alert offshore mariners of the hazard to navigation. 

"Thanks to the EPIRB, Coast Guard rescue crews were able to locate the vessel in distress," said Lt. Caleigh J. Cobb, Coast Guard District Seven command center duty officer. "We are grateful to have saved all seven people aboard, getting the mariners back home safe was our highest priority."

No medical concerns were reported.
