1. This ALCOAST announces the pathway for Coast Guard engineers
seeking merchant mariner credentials (MMC) issued by the National
Maritime Center (NMC), initiated by REF (A), supported by REF (B),
and outlined in REF (C). The Military to Mariner (M2M) program
with Cutter Forces (CG-751) has established a pathway to the
Qualified Member of Engine Department (QMED) rated endorsement. The
new M2M course will satisfy all types of QMED credentials.
2. As a part of Coast Guard's commitment to credentialing and
lifelong learning, the M2M program received NMC approval for its
QMED course for interested engineering officers, CWOs, MK, EM, and
DC ratings. This course will meet the requirements for all types of
QMED credentials. Upon completion of the QMED course requirements
and exam, M2M will issue a certificate that members can submit to
NMC for credit as part of their MMC application. This certificate
removes the hurdle for members to take exams at a Regional Exam
Center. By removing the need to take outside training courses per
REF (D), the certificate allows members to allocate their annual
$4,500 Credentialing Assistance benefit toward other credentials or
adding endorsements to their MMC. Participation in M2M courses is
strictly voluntary for Coast Guard members. Units shall not make
completion of M2M courses a requirement for any reason. More
